Marine Surveyor

Overview: Marine surveyors (Ship Maintenance Engineers) examine ships in harbors and ports to determine the condition of the hull, machinery and equipment. They examine sections of the hull, inspect sea valves, ventilators and fittings to determine repair or replacement needs. They submit recommendations to ships' owners.
Duties: Conduct under-water examination of ships' hulls and equipment and marine facilities by means of under-water cameras mounted or remotely controlled robots or by diving.

They assess condition of underwater equipment and determine what kinds of repairs and replacements are needed. Take photographs of areas under inspection to verify repair needs.

They estimate costs and time needed to complete repairs. Decide whether repairs require dry-docking a ship or whether they can be accomplished by divers under water.

Analyze damaged equipment after removal and replacement in order to determine the causes of the damage. They recommend what precautions are needed to avoid future damage.

Job Outlook: Employment of marine surveyors is expected to decline slightly through 2018.
Salary Range (National Average): $46,000 to $51,000
Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A college degree in marine engineering is the most common educational requirement for an entry position in this occupation. Courses in mechanical engineering, maintenance engineering, cost engineering and computer applications are essential. Most states require registration of marine surveyors.
