|Overview:||The diesel engine is the workhorse powering the Nation’s trucks and buses because it delivers more power, is more efficient, and is more durable than its gasoline-burning counterpart. Diesel-powered engines also are becoming more prevalent in light vehicles, including passenger vehicles, pickups, and other work trucks.|
|Degree(s):||A.A.S. Mechanical Engineering Technology
|Job Outlook:||Employment of truck mechanics is expected to increase more slowly than average through 2018. Continued growth in the number of vehicles will provide work for basic maintenance and repair. Workers with advanced understanding of new automotive technology will find the best prospects.|
|Education Level:||Training for this occupation generally requires a High School Degree, plus additional coursework in a vocational or technical school. In some cases, employers may require an Associate Degree.|
|Additional Training/Education:||Although many persons qualify for diesel service technician and mechanic jobs through years of on-the-job training, authorities on diesel engines recommend the completion of a formal diesel engine training program. Employers prefer to hire graduates of formal training programs because those workers often have a head start in training and are able to advance quickly to the journey level of diesel service.|
