Computer Hardware Technician

Overview: Repair, maintain, and install computer hardware such as peripheral equipment and word processing systems.
Duties:
Degree(s): A.A.S. Computer Engineering Technology 
A.A.S. Computer Information Systems: Computer Programming Track 
A.S. Mathematics and Science 
A.A.S. Computer Information Systems: Microcomputer Applications Software Track 
Job Outlook: Employment of computer hardware technician is expected to grow more slowly than average through 2018 due to foreign competition in computer hardware manufacturing. Growth is expected to take place in computer systems design.
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires a High School Degree, plus additional coursework in a vocational or technical school. In some cases, employers may require an Associate Degree.
Recommended Skills:
  • Installing equipment, machines, wiring, etc. according to a set of specifications.
  • Paying attention to what other people are saying, and taking time to understand the points being made.
  • Performing routine maintenance and/or repairs on equipment using the appropriate tools.
  • Using your hands to operated fine instruments and precision tools.
  • Ability to identify a problem, review related information, develop and evaluate options, and implement a solution.
  • The ability to understand complex written paragraphs, instructions, or reports.
  • Analyzing the symptoms of a problem and deciding what actions should be taken to resolve the problem.

  • Having the ability to work with equipment or material things.
