Sound Engineering Technicians

Overview: Operate machines and equipment to record, synchronize, mix, or reproduce music, voices, or sound effects in sporting arenas, theater productions, recording studios, or movie and video productions.
Duties:
Degree(s): A.S. Engineering Science 
A.A.S. Music Production 
Job Outlook: Employment of sound engineering technicians is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. Audio and video equipment is in heavy demand in many new buildings, and many new technicians will be needed to install, maintain and repair the equipment. An increase in the use of digital signage will also lead to higher demand. In the movie industry, employment for these workers will grow because they are needed to install digital movie screens.
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.

  • Using your hands to operated fine instruments and precision tools.
  • Paying attention to what other people are saying, and taking time to understand the points being made.
  • Performing routine maintenance and/or repairs on equipment using the appropriate tools.
  • Identifying the most appropriate equipment and tools needed to get a job done.
  • Watching gauges and any other types of indicators to make sure equipment is running properly.
  • Operating equipment and machinery.
  • Inspecting and testing products or services to assure they meet the desired specifications.
