Healthcare Social Workers
|Overview:||Provide persons, families, or vulnerable populations with the psychosocial support needed to cope with chronic, acute, or terminal illnesses, such as Alzheimer's, cancer, or AIDS. Services include advising family care givers, providing patient education and counseling, and making necessary referrals for other social services.|
|Degree(s):||A.S. Environmental Science
|Job Outlook:||Employment of medical and public health social workers is expected to grow faster than the average through 2018 primarily due to the rise in the elderly population. These social workers will be needed in finding the best care and assistance for the aging and to support their families. Social workers with backgrounds in gerontology will be in demand. Opportunities will be assisted living facilities, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, home care agencies, and hospices.|
|Education Level:||Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.|
