Midwife

Overview: Nurse midwives are registered nurses and monitor and advise women during their pregnancies and post natal checkups. They deliver babies under natural conditions and examine and care for newborn infants. They work in cooperation with obstetricians.
Duties: Nurse midwives provide family centered care for women with uncomplicated pregnancies. They examine and assess the health of women throughout their normal healthy pregnancies, through their labor and delivery and guide the birthing process.

They educate women about diet, exercise, breastfeeding, parenting, and pre and post-natal care encouraging them to make good health decisions.

Nurse midwives must be able to detect abnormal pregnancies and consult with other healthcare professions and execute emergency measures if medical assistance is not available.

They provide health counseling and education for the entire family in preparation for parenthood. They suggest, when needed, various types of medical tests for their patients.

Job Outlook: Employment of midwives is expected to grow much faster than average through 2018. These nurses will be in high demand, particularly in medically underserved areas such as inner cities and rural areas. Relative to physicians, these RNs increasingly serve as lower-cost primary care providers.
Salary Range (National Average): $35,000 to $39,000
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: To become a certified nurse midwife in the U.S., a person must be a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. Training programs include pregnancies, labor and post-partum care, newborn care, preventative measures, detection of abnormal conditions of mother and child, medical assistance and emergency measures. Certification is provided by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and Midwifery Education and Accreditation Council.
