Sales Representative (Chemicals & Drugs)

Overview: Sales representatives for chemicals and drugs market their company's products to manufacturers of finished products such as pharmaceutical medications, paints, plastics, etc. They determine customers' needs and provide technical production advice.
Duties: They confer with customers' production engineers to identify their specific needs for chemicals and drugs. Determine specifications and any customizing required for chemical and drug products.

They prepare proposals, give marketing presentations and show sample materials to customer executives. They inform their own chemical engineers of the customers' specifications and needs.

Confer with customers to negotiate sales contracts specifying terms, dates, prices and warranties. They advise their production executives of the contract terms and conditions.

Monitor completion and delivery of the chemicals or drugs to the customer. They confer with customers' production engineering teams to assure satisfaction of the delivered products.

Job Outlook: Employment of sales representatives (Chemicals & Drugs) is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. Job growth will result from the continued expansion in the variety and number of chemical and drug products sold throughout the economy.
Starting Salary: Experienced sales representatives are paid on the basis of salary plus commission and bonuses.
Salary Range (National Average): $35,000 to $40,000

Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: Employers prefer to hire graduates with a bachelor's degree in industrial distribution (sales and services of manufactured products), chemical engineering. New sales workers are usually trained by accompanying experienced workers on sales calls.
