Sales Representative (Printed Advertising)

Overview: Advertising sales prepresentatives sell space in printed publications to advertising agents & busiess organizations. They help clients design layouts & format to optomize ad appeal to readers. They suggest ways to measure ad efficacy by means of consumer behavior surveys & experiments.
Duties: They confer with customers to identify their advertising needs. They determine what kind of printed advertising and graphic art support best meet the customer's requirements.

They prepare proposals and give marketing presentations to customer executives. They inform their own advertising design teams about the customer's graphic arts needs and requests.

Confer with customers to negotiate sales contracts specifying terms, dates, and prices. They inform their own graphic artists and production teams about the customer's contract terms.

Monitor completion and production of the contract's advertising materials. They help customers design surveys and experiments to assess readers' reaction to the advertising materials.

Job Outlook: Employment of sales representatives (printed advertising) is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. Job growth will result from the continued expansion in the variety and number of products sold and sales representatives will be needed to accommodate this expansion. Sales representatives can help ensure that retailers offer the latest products to their customers and businesses acquire the tools they need to increase their efficiency.
Starting Salary: Experienced sales representatives are paid on the basis of salary plus commission and bonuses.
Salary Range (National Average): $32,000 to $36,000
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: Publishers prefer to hire graduates with a college degree and a course background in marketing, advertising, communications, graphic arts and business administration. In many firms, new sales workers are trained by accompanying more experienced workers on sales calls.
