Administrative Assistant

Overview: Administrative assistants coordinate office activities to ensure that information gets disseminated to staff and clients. They control day-to-day office business operations, database management and desktop publishing programs to prepare reports.
Duties: Administrative assistants organize and prioritize the flow of computer-based information to the professional staff members of an organization so that business decisions are efficiently handled. They monitor all office transactions.

Administrative assistants use computer software programs to create and prepare information spreadsheets for monitoring business operations. They manage data base information and prepare business reports and graphics. They may train new clerical staff in business office information handling procedures and the operation of computer software used in the administrative offices. They evaluate the efficiency and users' satisfaction with new office procedures, computer software and new equipment and advise executives of changes needed in automated information handling.

Job Outlook: Employment of administrative assistants is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. Good opportunities will be available in medical and legal offices. Growing industries - construction, education, science, social assistance, technical services -- will generate the most new jobs. Best opportunities will be for workers with extensive knowledge of computer software applications.
Salary Range (National Average): $31,000 to $35,000

Education Level: The typical training required for this career is generally a High School Degree or GED Certificate.
Additional Training/Education: Most employers require the completion of a technical institute certificate program that takes about nine months or a college associate degree in office computer software and office technology. Recommended courses include computer database management, word/information processing, desktop publishing, principles of management, accounting, statistics, business law and human resource management.
