Catering Administrator

Overview: Caterer's coordinate the food service activities of a hotel, restaurant, country club, resort, etc. for social and business meetings or parties. They plan the menus and estimate costs for food, beverages, entertainment and supplies. They manage all services of a catered event.
Duties: They confer with clients who are requesting a catered social or business event such as a wedding, party, business conference or dinner. Provide cost estimates for food, beverage and supplies.

They plan the food and beverage menus, and organize and hire staff persons for meal preparation, bar service, entertainment, and setup. Arrange for audio-visual and lighting equipment.

For outdoor tent-covered affairs, they arrange for platforms, tenting, tables and seating facilities. Manage deliveries and set up of portable kitchen equipment and beverage and bar counters.

They provide for the preparation of special foods and desserts such as wedding cakes. Manage all operations and confer with clients during the catered event to assure satisfaction.

Job Outlook: Employment of catering administrators is expected to grow more slowly than average through 2018. Growth will occur as consumers continue to demand more dining options and prefer that others do the food preparation for them.
Salary Range (National Average): $27,000 to $30,000
Education Level: The typical training required for this career is generally a High School Degree or GED Certificate.
Additional Training/Education: An increasing number of catering administrators obtain their training through a certificate or associate degree program in a two-year college, technical, or culinary arts institute. Certificate programs range from six to twelve months with courses in catering administration, culinary arts, business management and practical work experience.
