Hospital Administrator

Overview: Hospital administrators make decisions about the business and financial operations of their hospital such as budgets, accounting, patient charge rates, salaries, and selection and development of staff workers. They decide on how to invest hospital funds in research and community services.
Duties: They develop or improve programs or services for scientific research, preventative medicine, medical rehabilitation and community health. Oversee the hospitals medical ethic standards.

They administer financial operations such as budget planning, accounting & hospital patient charges. They make decisions about purchases of medical equipment.

They direct hiring procedures and training programs for hospital physicians, nurses, technicians and staff. Determine methods to evaluate the performance effectiveness of hospital employees.

They design the hospital's compensation and promotion program as well as special recognition awards for outstanding performance by hospital employees. Negotiate with employee labor unions.

Job Outlook: Employment of hospital administrators is expected to grow faster than average through 2018. The need to improve quality and efficiency of healthcare while controlling costs will drive demand. Additional demand will stem from the need to secure patient records according to law and recruit workers and increase retention.
Salary Range (National Average): $32,000 to $37,000

Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A master's degree in hospital administration, health sciences or public health is the usual qualification. A bachelor's degree is acceptable for entry positions such as administrative assistant or assistant to a department supervisor in hospitals or nursing homes. All states require a licensing examination for nursing home senior administrators.
