Job Development Specialist

Overview: Job development specialists counsel disadvantaged job applicants who are under-educated how to find job skills training programs and job openings. They advise organizations how to design jobs so they can be filled by these applicants. They track the success of their work.
Duties: They visit with human resource management departments of organizations to identify jobs that can be filled by under-educated and disabled persons.

They assist management in the design of affirmative action programs that would enable the hiring and development of under-educated persons. They help redesign job duties for these employees.

They administer aptitude and achievement tests to under-educated clients to assess their training needs and special talents. They prescribe job skills training programs to remedy deficiencies.

Counsel their clients to help them adapt to a new job and their fellow workers in an organization. They assess their clients' progress and advise them how to grow and advance.

Degree(s): A.A. Liberal Arts and Sciences 
A.S. Liberal Arts and Sciences (Mathematics and Science) 
A.A.S. Management: Marketing Concentration 
A.A.S. Management: Real Estate-Insurance Concentration 
A.S. Business Administration (Accounting and Marketing) 
Job Outlook: Employment of job development specialists is expected to grow much faster than average through 2018. Legislation and court rulings revising standards in various areas will increase demand for human resources, training, and job development specialist.
Salary Range (National Average): $32,000 to $36,000
Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A bachelor's degree or a master's degree in human resource management or in psychology with a concentration in industrial and organizational psychology is the preferred background for this occupation. Courses in ergonomics, special education for the disabled, counseling psychology and computer applications will strengthen your credentials.
