Revenue Agent (Government)

Overview: Revenue agents conduct audits and investigations of federal income tax returns of persons or organizations to decide if taxes are due to the government. They interview taxpayers and examine their receipts, calculations and deductions to determine if & how much more tax is due.
Duties: They conduct audits of taxpayer's income tax returns to verify their accuracy and validity for the purpose of determining whether more taxes are due.

They analyze the accounting books and records of individual taxpayers or organizations to determine whether the accounting methods used are in compliance with tax regulations.

They investigate business operating methods, specific large financial transactions, invoices, payments, etc. to verify their accuracy and compliance with income tax criteria.

They secure taxpayers agreement to pay additional taxes as calculated by the revenue agent or their intentions to appeal their case. They serve on appeal boards and committees.

Job Outlook: Employment of revenue agents is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018 stemming from changes in government policy toward tax enforcement and from growth in the number of businesses. The Federal Government is expected to increase its tax enforcement efforts, and new technology and information sharing among tax agencies make it easier for agencies to pinpoint potential offenders, increasing the number of cases for audit and collection.
Salary Range (National Average): $37,000 to $42,000
Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A bachelor's degree in accounting with a concentration in taxes is the usual educational requirement for this occupation. Courses in computer-applications in accounting, auditing and financial management are essential. Certification by the Institute of Internal Auditors or the Certified Public Accountants by passing a written examination is helpful.
