Package Designer

Overview: Package designers artistically plan and design containers and labels for products such as foods, beverages, toiletries, etc. They confer with market planners to determine package needs to attract consumer attention and protection of contents. They prepare drawings & package mock-ups.
Duties: They confer with product planning and production management to determine what kind of packaging is needed for new products to protect the contents and attract consumer's attention.

They artistically design proposals for packaging a new product. They may use cardboard, paper, glass, plastic, metal or wood in the design.

Decide upon the graphic arts style and color as well as the text to be included on the package. Prepare mock-ups of the packages for review and critique by marketing and production managers.

They conduct consumer behavior research studies to measure buyer's preferences for packaging styles, colors, text and other design features.

Job Outlook: Employment of package designers is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018.Demand will increase as advertising firms create print and Web marketing and promotional materials for a growing number of products and services. Growth in Internet advertising is expected to increase the number of designers. Individuals with Web site design and animation experience will have the best opportunities.
Salary Range (National Average): $28,000 to $34,000
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: An associate or bachelor's degree in commercial art from a college or school of art is the usual required training. Course work in studio arts, 3-D design, applied design, graphic arts and computer-aided design is essential. Applicants should assemble a "portfolio" containing examples of their best work to show employers.

  • Using logic to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Composing and communicating your ideas in written form.
