Ornamental-Metalwork Designer

Overview: These designers create designs for metal items such as latticework, light fixtures, clocks and ornamental household items. They draw detailed sketches of their artwork & specify fabrication methods to produce the items using forging tools, machine tools and welding equipment.
Duties: They artistically designs patterns and styles for metal household products, ornaments and works of art. Their works range from clocks, fireplace equipment, lamps to wall decorations.

They experiment using different methods to produce their metal works of art. This can include forging, use of power machine tools such as lathes and metal binding equipment.

They decide how to best market their products through art shops, art shows and exhibits. They determine pricing based on the cost of production and consumer acceptance.

They work with architects to design and create customized metal decorations, railings and works of art for new homes and buildings being restored.

Job Outlook: Employment of ornamental-metalwork designers is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. Employment growth will arise from an increase in consumer and business demand for new or upgraded products in consumer electronics, medicine, transportation, and other fields. The trend towards offshoring of ornamental design work could continue to slow employment growth of U.S.
Starting Salary: Earnings of beginning artists vary greatly and are often supplemented by a second job.
Salary Range (National Average): $26,000 to $29,000
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: An associate or bachelor's degree in studio and commercial art is required of these artists. A knowledge of the use of metals and glass is essential as well as additional courses in art history and fashion trends. It is important for new graduates to have a professional portfolio of their best works when seeking employment.
