Copy Writer

Overview: Copy writers creatively author text for publication in newspapers or magazines and also for radio and TV commercials. They consult with representatives of the sponsors seeking to advertise their products and services to determine style, size or length of the ads.
Duties: They confer with editors or with advertising agents to determine what kind of message must be communicated to the readers. They exchange ideas for the text needed.

Write drafts of the text for critique by editors. They decide what kinds of graphic art work or photographs are needed to compliment the text.

Prepare final layout of text and art work in order to create 'camera-ready' master sheets. They type final versions of text using computer-based work processing systems.

They study comments of readers and critics to determine how to make future improvements. Confer with advertising agents to determine if product sales were increased by published ads.

Job Outlook: Employment of copy editors is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. Demand will grow for editors for online media and publications, business text message service writing, newsletters, and other publicity pieces for business attracting new customers.
Salary Range (National Average): $28,000 to $32,000
Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: Most employers prefer to hire copy writers with a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or English and with a broad liberal arts background. For those who deal with technical or specialized topics, a background in that field--engineering, business, politics, etc. is essential.
