Social Service Volunteer (Peace Corps, Vista)

Overview: The Vista volunteer lives and works with and among the poor in the USA, Puerto Rico, Guam or Virgin Islands. They serve for one year in large cities, rural areas and Indian reservations. They are committed to helping poor people improve the conditions of their lives.
Duties: They design training programs to teach community residents skills in home economics, healthcare, hygiene, as well as literacy and job skills to enhance their employability.

They confer with local employers and educational institutions to plan and implement programs which would provide the unemployed poor persons with job training needed for employment.

They design and administer local community outreach programs which can provide shelters for the homeless and counseling rehabilitation services for alcoholism and drug addiction.

They assess all new programs to identify benefits, accomplishments and the cost to operate each program. They make recommendations to VISTA management about program effectiveness.

Degree(s): A.A.S. Management: Marketing Concentration

Job Outlook: Employment of social service volunteers (Peace Corps, Vista) is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018. A wide variety of openings in the VISTA and Peace Corps programs are available all over the world. The volunteers live and work among the poor in urban areas and rural areas.
Starting Salary: During their assignment volunteers receive a monthly subsistence allowance equivalent to the cost of living in the low-income community where they are serving. The allowance covers the cost of food, housing and incidentals. Upon assignment completion, they receive an additional bonus for each month of service and an education tuition award.
Salary Range (National Average): $19,000 to $26,000
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: Most VISTA applicants have an associate degree, bachelor's or master's degree in one of the social sciences, behavioral science, public administration or business administration. VISTA volunteer training consists of several days of orientation plus specialized job skills training during their one-year assignment.
