Special Education Administrator

Overview: Special education administrators develop education programs and policies for schools and state institutions teaching mentally and physically disabled children. They supervise placement of students, train and evaluate teachers. They administer budgets and federal grant monies.
Duties: They formulate special education programs including curriculum design, teacher training and policies regarding admission of students to schools that teach disabled children.

They specify curriculum goals, course content, teaching methods and tests to be used to assess achievement level of the students. Determine how students are screened and placed in courses.

They design methods to train teachers for the disabled and techniques to evaluate their proficiency. Set policies and criteria for certification of teachers.

Confer with government agencies and recommends legislation that can enhance the training resources and rehabilitation needs for disabled children. They give lectures to public gatherings.

Degree(s): A.A.S. Management: Marketing Concentration 
A.A.S. Management: Real Estate-Insurance Concentration 
A.S. Business Administration (Accounting and Marketing) 
Job Outlook: Employment of special education administrators is expected to grow faster than average through 2018 due to high demand for special education. Positions in inner cities and rural areas are the most plentiful. Bilingual workers with multicultural experience will be in high demand.
Salary Range (National Average): $28,000 to $37,000
Education Level: Candidates for this occupation generally have completed their Bachelor’s Degree and have continued their education either 1 or 2 years longer.
Additional Training/Education: Educational administrator is not usually an entry level job. Most special education administrators start in a teaching position with a bachelor's or a master's degree in special education. Generally, an administrative position will require a master's in special education and administration. Courses in curriculum development, instructional methods, and the administration of special education are essential.
