Chiropractor

Overview: Chiropractors diagnose and treat disorders and pain in the spinal column, skeletal joints and muscles. They diagnose through the use of X-rays, laboratory tests, and patient's medical history. Treatment involves manipulation, massage, whirlpool baths, heat treatment, ultra sound, etc.
Duties: They diagnose patient's disorders through physical & neurological examinations, patient medical history, X-ray & laboratory tests. Attention is given to posture, spine & muscle-skeletal structure.

Treat patients through the use of manual manipulation of the spinal column, limbs and joints. They also massage the patient's afflicted areas.

Treatment also includes the application of heat, ultrasound and water whirlpool baths to areas of pain & weakness in the patient's muscle and skeletal structure.

May design and fit patients with straps, braces or other support mechanisms to help correct posture problems or to support weakness in the muscles.

Job Outlook: Employment of chiropractors is expected to increase much faster than average through 2018 due to consumer demand for alternative healthcare treatments. The growing elderly population will fuel growth as will the increasing use of chiropractors by children.
Salary Range (National Average): $52,000 to $57,000

Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: All states require that practicing chiropractors be licensed by fulfilling educational requirements and passing a state board examination. Most states require two to four years of undergraduate college education plus graduation from a four-year chiropractic college. To renew their licenses, almost all states require that chiropractors be enrolled in a continuing education program each year.
