Economist

Overview: Economists design, conduct and interpret studies about the way persons or organizations spend or invest monies in products, services, or raw materials. They investigate what the financial advantages are of producing, distributing and marketing products in different ways.
Duties: Design studies and collect data about the availability, prices, and demand for products or services. They also determine the spending patterns as a result of shifts in the economy's health.

They statistically analyze data describing consumer and institutional spending patterns and how they vary with respect to financial market conditions and geographical areas.

Make decisions about the optimum way to produce, price and sell a particular line of products or services.

Summarize statistical economic data in graphs, charts and tables in order to explain the implications to executives who must make business decisions about the wisdom of buying or selling.

Degree(s): A.A.S. Accounting 
Job Outlook: Employment of economists is expected to grow more slowly through 2018. Workers with economic backgrounds will be needed to work as financial analysts, market analysts, public policy consultants, researchers, purchasing managers, and positions in business and the insurance industry.
Starting Salary: With advancement, salaries for senior economists are higher than salaries for Ph.D. university professors.
Salary Range (National Average): $38,000 ro $50,000
Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A bachelor's degree with a major in economics is sufficient for many entry level positions as an assistant economist in private business organizations and government economic research agencies. A master's degree or doctorate is becoming increasingly important for advancement.

  • Paying attention to what other people are saying, and taking time to understand the points being made.
  • Allocating and budgeting your time for different tasks so that things get done when needed.
  • Using mathematics and/or statistics to solve problems.
  • Ability to identify a problem, review related information, develop and evaluate options, and implement a solution.
  • The ability to understand complex written paragraphs, instructions, or reports.
  • Using logic to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Composing and communicating your ideas in written form.
